Kobus started playing trombone at the age of 17, after playing trumpet for 4 years, and soon he added the euphonium as part of his instrumental repertoire. Currently his focus is on the trombone in which he obtained the qualification Performance Diploma with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of England and is busy with his studies in Licentiate Performance Diploma, also with the Royal Schools of England.

For Kobus to have come this far, in 2015 he enrolled as an outside student with the music department at the North-West University in Potchefstroom where he qualified and won the bursary competition for soloists, competing against opera singers and other instrumentalists.

As an active classical musician Kobus play first trombone for the Rand Symphony Orchestra in Randburg and Busk Brass Quintet, freelancing for other symphony orchestras and ensembles is also part of his musical career and he is still active as a soloist. Being active as a musician he realised that there is a need for teaching of the instrument and to create an environment where young and old can enjoy the sounds of brass instruments.

From a young age Kobus dreamed of being a soloist on the trombone, little did he knew that he would step way beyond that. He believes, if you have a dream but you don’t make the dream part of your life, you are a dreamer, the moment you bring the dream and your life in as one you become a realist.
